Chobits: Chi 02

chobits cosplay - chii aka elda 02One of my readers, who wishes to remain anonymous, contributed this cosplay of Chii. No, I don’t think that the contributor is the cosplayer because one, the contributor is a guy and two, the contributor found this off a website he can’t remember… This was just sitting in his hard drive apparently…

This Chi is probably as cute as the other Chi I featured… I really love her dress! That must have taken a long time to sew.

Great cosplay, great photography! And I really love the additional effects added to the photograph… It really does look like an official Chobits illustration!

EDIT: Big thanks to radioactiveKIRA for informing me about Jumplove! Jumplove and King Crimson cosplay together and they have a huge gallery on their site. I’ll be sure to feature more of them soon!

Chobits: Chi

chobits cosplay - chi aka elda Chi is probably one of the most cosplayed characters from an anime series, and yet there are very few people who can cosplay her accurately.

I suppose not everyone can pull off a cute and innocent looking face…

This cosplayer though… I like her very much, even though she has a silver wig on. One could probably argue that this is a manga version of Chi, right?

Chi is a persocom, or a personal computer who is an android. In the Chobits world, PCs and Laptops/Notebooks are in the shape of a human robot, and they can virtually follow you everywhere. An interesting note is that the persocoms are solar powered, getting their energy only from the sun.

This Chi is so cute… Makes me want to have Chobit ears too…

Found in Photobucket!

Fushigi Yugi: Yuki Miaka

fushigi yugi curious play cosplay - yuki miakaI can’t believe I missed a nice source of cosplay pictures… Photobucket! What could have been more obvious right? But yes, I suppose I’m pretty clueless that way…

Talk about classics on this one. I remember the time when Fushigi Yugi aka Curious Play first aired on the local network… You won’t believe how many people were swooning over Tamahome, Hotohori, and the other bishounens you’ll find in the series.

Too bad most people hate Miaka… She’s such a clueless, bottomless pit sort of girl who had all the boys eating out of her hand. I suppose that’s the reason why people hate her so much.

But this cosplayer is cute though! I love the roses in her hair… I wonder what happened to her uniform’s bow?

Emergency Cosplay Results

So, I did, in fact, manage to somehow make a costume in less than a week. With some help from my boyfriend, of course...!

I will create a few entries on the creation process of the costume, maybe two or so. They will be put up over the course of the week.

To summarize: I made Izumi's costume from Kujibiki Unbalance/Genshiken. I showed up at the Garage in Harvard Square a little before 8pm on Sunday, where the judges had already sort of packed up... but of course, they still let me enter because I was there before 8.

They took my photo and asked me a few questions about my costume. I entered in the novice category. They didn't spend very long looking at my costume, maybe one or two minutes.

In the end, I got an honourable mention for my costume. It was a little disappointing... as does every cosplayer who works hard on their costume and enters a contest, I wanted to place. I was hoping for 3rd. ^_^;;; But that was optimistic, anyway, and I'm really proud that I was able to create a nice costume in less than a week and wear it somewhere where some people would appreciate it. One girl actually know who I was and what series I was from! That was pretty nice.

Here is a final costume photo of me as Izumi, after returning from the event, and a photo of the figure I based my costume on:

More later...!

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Soryu Asuka Langley

evangelion cosplay - soryu asuka langleyThe beautiful pilot of Unit 02 in her school uniform, Soryu Asuka Langley is perhaps the complete opposite of Ayanami Rei when it comes to their personality. Asuka is a cheerful girl who isn’t afraid to speak her mind with a bit of an egotistical attitude… At least, that’s how she wants people to think of her. Deep inside, she’s actually quite insecure, due to her traumatic childhood.

There have been a lot of cosplays of the 2 famous Neon Genesis Evangelion girls, but this is one of the most impressive Asuka cosplays I’ve ever seen. Really great job on this one! I can arguably say that’s a mischievous smile on her face… Just like Asuka!

EDIT: Thanks to SoL for letting me know the coplayer’s name is Kipi!

OS-Tan: Windows 2000 03

os-tan cosplay - 2k-tan windows 2000

More requests have been added for 2k-tan and XP-tan cosplays. Unfortunately, I haven’t found any cool looking XP-tans in a while, so this 2k-tan will have to do for now.

There have been two 2k-tans so far on this blog, the first one you can find here, and the second one here. But I’m not sure which to pick… I may coincidentally like the second one better than the this one… Though this cosplayer followed 2k-tan’s design more accurately. It’s really quite hard to choose.

First found on 0PERAT1VE!

Fate/Stay Night: Saber a.k.a. Arturia Pendragon

arisa mizuhara in fate/stay night cosplay - saber aka arturia pendragonMy apologies for flooding the blog with Arisa Mizuhara’s cosplays, but this is a rare opportunity to show a really good Fate/Stay Night cosplay of Saber. And, might I add, this is also a good time to post a requested cosplay image.

It’s quite difficult to look for a nice cosplay of this character (who is my very favorite!). I’m not entirely sure why. It may be because of the costume or the hair, but whatever the reason… This cosplay is done very nicely.

Alright, so her eyes aren’t the same color as the original character’s. And the sword can use some work. But really… The cosplayer herself is breath-taking, don’t you think? A really nice camera angle too… No wonder Arisa is a professional cosplay idol.

Bleach: Hinamori Momo

bleach cosplay - hinamori momoThis is probably the one shinigami I really feel sorry for… Hinamori Momo.

And I also keep forgetting to post this..! It’s been in the Bleach Blog for a long time now, and I have asked permission from Rukia to post it already…

And yes, we clarified that this is Mei Wai, the same cosplayer who did Lineage II’s Light Elf and Dark Elf… Makes you wonder if the girl could ever possibly do a bad cosplay (I hope that never happens).

Emergency Cosplay Project

So I found out just today that Tokyo Kid in Harvard Square is having a cosplay contest on Sunday, Oct. 28. Obviously, I can't pass this up (Tokyo Kid is one of my favourite stores, and it's another cosplay opportunity), but my costumes are at home in CT. >_>
Solution: I ran around to a lot of stores today and got almost everything I need to make Tachibana Izumi from Kujibiki Unbalance (which is, in turn, from the show Genshiken).

I'll be documenting the process of making a costume in less than a week, so I hope everything works out, and that I'll learn some things!

More updates to come. I have a lot of homework to do right now...

Vocaloid 2: Hatsune Miku

vocaloid 2 cosplay - hatsune miku

Double post day perhaps? You know I have something really good when I double post… More to my amusement really.

To the fans of my previous cosplay article, including: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi: Suzumiya Haruhi, Gundam Seed Destiny: Meer Campbell 03, Inuyasha: Kikyo and Inuyasha, Inyusaha: Inuyasha… I give you, the name behind the cosplays… Arisa Mizuhara!

I was only able to find her after reading up an article on Vocaloid 2, which is apparently a “singing” synthesizer. But anyway, the character they made, Hatsune Miku, is rather cute and I thought I’d look up to see if anyone cosplayed her yet.

That’s how I found Arisa… Thank you, Google!

Please visit Arisa’s site, which has a lot more impressive cosplays!

Fatal Fury / The King of Fighters: Shiranui Mai

I know Shiranui Mai is supposed to be the sexiest female fighting character ever to be created during the 16-bit era… But frankly, I’m thankful to have found a cosplay of her that doesn’t make her look… well… slutty.

fatal fury / the king of fighters cosplay - shiranui mai

Shiranui Mai, Ninjutsu and Koppo-Ken master, who, in her mind, thinks Andy Bogard is her fiance… Though Andy chooses to suppress his feelings for her and would most often treat her as his younger sister.

Frankly, who can resist a girl like Mai?

Pretty cosplay, isn’t this? Most people would probably argue that the cosplayer’s footwear is wrong and that Mai doesn’t wear dark stockings with this signature outfit… But hey… Isn’t she to die for?

Photo originally from Dyson’s Fear in his article “On Cosplay“, which unfortunately has more hate on Western cosplay. My comments on this sensitive topic lie here.

OS-Tan: Windows ME

os-tan cosplay - windows meA lot of people seem to be interested in OS-Tans since I brought the topic up… So I thought a new OS-Tan Cosplay picture might be best to start my flood on cosplays yet again.

Now here we have ME-Tan. As I mentioned before in the first review of 2k-Tan, ME is quite an unstable Operating System, so 2k-Tan or XP-Tan is usually by her side. That’s why she has a signature “!” on her bow… Error warnings are always and forever there.

But isn’t she a cute ME-Tan? I don’t think a lot of people would mind having an OS like her since she’s so cute! Good job on this one! I love the green hair, since I like this shade more than the original yellow-green color…

0perat1ve! os-tan fansiteOh, before I forget, this picture is from 0PERAT1VE!, an OS-Tan Fansite, though I adjusted this image in terms of size, contrast, and brightness. Please go have a visit in their site when you have the time for more information and pictures on OS-Tans!

Di Gi Charat: Dejiko

di gi charat cosplay - dejiko Di Gi Charat, or Dejiko for short, is a cat girl and princess of Planet Di Gi Charat. She is 10-years-old, and she came to earth with the hopes of becoming an idol singer.

…ok, this cosplayer is obviously not 10-years-old. Add to the fact that Dejiko has green eyes and green hair… Why am I posting this cosplayer when there are a lot of inconsistencies to the anime character she’s portraying?

Well…

Because of the obvious fact that she’s cute. ^_^ No more… No less…

Mahoromatic: Ando Mahoro

mahoromatic cosplay - ando mahoroGet this… A really cute android wants to be your maid and be at your service. She cooks for you, cleans for you, but she hates one thing… Ecchi!

“Ecchi na no wa ikenai to omoimasu” - “I think that dirty thoughts are bad.”

Ando Mahoro, a former combat android, who is immensely powerful and fast, as created by VESPER to fight off the aliens who plan to invade earth. Being given only 398 days to live, she decided to become a maid for her late superior commander’s son, Misato Suguru, presumably due to the guilt she felt for having to kill her commander when an alien took him hostage.

Adorable isn’t she? Though the anime depicts her with black hair and this cosplayer has light brown hair, I don’t think anyone would turn down the flyers she’s passing around.

Final Fantasy VII: Tifa Lockhart 02

final fantasy 7 cosplay - tifa lockhartI think I may have found a nice rival for the Philippine Tifa Lockhart.

I mean… really… she’s… “wow”.

Anyway… Tifa Lockhart is Cloud’s childhood friend. She is one of the head of the group called AVALANCHE, who’s main objective is to destroy Shinra.

Based on technicality, this cosplayer does not have the low, pony-tailed hair with the dolphin-like end… But really… Can you complain about such a tiny detail?

Gundam Seed Destiny: Meer Campbell 03

gundam seed destiny cosplay - meer campbell 03More people seem to like cosplaying the fake than the real Lacus Clyne. I wonder why that is?

I’m not really complaining… Maybe just a little bit. I like Lacus better than Meer. But I did feel sorry for her in the end. Having to live someone else’s life… no matter how glamorous it is, is torture. You may enjoy it for a while, but you’ll be destroyed once you’ve been found out.

But anyway, this is a beautiful cosplay! She definitely a rival for the two other Meers I’ve featured before. Great Job!

Granado Espada: The Wizard

granado espada cosplay - wizardIf there’s anything that’s rare in the cosplay world, it’s having pretty guys who’ll cosplay (a.k.a. bishounen as the Japanese would call them).

I mean no offense, but really, most of the good cosplayers are female… or… Female cosplayers portraying male characters. There are hardly any serious guys who cosplay, so you can imagine why I love this picture! He’s such a cute boy!

(uh, oh… Nanao-chan is on fangirl mode..!)

Anyway, going back to the original topic, I found this picture in Kooh’s Blog.. There are more Granado Espada (Sword of the New World) cosplayers there. All of them are quite impressive too. You guys should check them out!

Great job on the cosplay! Hope I’ll see more from this cosplayer soon!

More Wonderflex and Feathers

So,
I tried to place an order for some Wonderflex and Friendly Plastic via cosplaysupplies.com, as I had mentioned in a previous post. Their methods are a little strange over there and they confirm your order via email before letting you actually place it. The reply to my order was that they were "having some trouble with their Wonderflex supplier" and therefore I can't place an order with them at this time.

All of this ended up being a blessing in disguise, as it were, because I have found other sources of Wonderflex that are far less expensive than cosplaysupplies.com.

Cosworx has Wonderflex, but their supply is apparently out at the moment. But when it's in, it sells for $30 for a big sheet, which is much less expensive than cosplaysupplies.com. I have also found a theatre supply company that sells it. I'm going to try to buy from one of these two places.

I would like to say that I still think cosplaysupplies.com is a great site and has a lot to offer, especially hard to find things like shoe-making supplies. I just won't be buying my Wonderflex from them, is all. Unless these other things fall through.

I have been doing a lot of research for supply resources, namely for plastics, armour, and feathers. I will need a lot of feathers for my Gwendolyn costume, and I was able to find a promising website or two. At Rainbow Feathers, they will custom dye feathers for you. This seems to be the way to go for this project. Their prices also seem pretty reasonable. I found a couple of other feather websites, but other than Rainbow, the only other one that seemed worth looking into was Lamplight Feathers. They seem to have a bunch of different items at a decent price.

OS-Tan: Windows 2000 02

os-tan cosplay - windows 2000 - 2k-tan

What rivalry we have for the first 2k-tan! Although I believe the later is more accurate in terms of costume, this cosplayer seems to be posing the modern look for 2k-tan. And she doesn’t have glasses, which is a must, signature look for 2k-tan!

Still… one can’t complain much when the character being cosplayed has no real, concrete look. 2k-tan’s a fan made character, who doesn’t belong to anyone… You can’t blame the fans for delivering their own interpretations of an OS-tan’s look, no?

Beautiful cosplay still… Absolutely fantastic!

Magic Knight Rayearth: Zagato

magic knight rayearth cosplay - zagatoHaving missed the GX-Con, I went about looking for my own stash of photos from previous conventions.

Back in 2005, I went to the Games and Gadgets Convention also known as the G2Con expecting to find the latest… well… Games and Gadgets! Too bad for me, there was hardly anything in that convention that I haven’t already seen i the local market place. Why do they name it a Games and Gadgets Convention when the main event was cosplay; I have no idea.

Anyway, it wasn’t a total lost, since there were some pretty impressive cosplayers at the even! This is a picture of one of the semi-finalists. I love the effect the smoke screen added to this picture! It fits Zagato really well!

I miss the days when I was able to go to conventions and snap photos on my own… Perhaps it’s time to go to another event!

Final Fantasy VII: Tifa Lockhart

image

A recent game convention in the Philippines known as the GX-Con hosted a lot of cosplayers in the event. One of the best looking cosplayers was Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII. She was interviewed by the White-haired Journalist from Sumodownload.com.

Tifa Lockhart of Final Fantasy VII. Need I say more? She’s one of the best Tifa cosplayers I’ve ever seen. She’s very kind, not turning down anyone who wanted to have a picture with her. If she becomes an actress, I definitely see a bright future ahead of this girl. - White-haired Journalist

This is definitely an impressive cosplay. She looks very nice even though it’s not a studio-type, professionally done photo! It’s brilliant!

I just wonder… If that’s the White-haired journalist beside her, then why isn’t his hair white? ^o^

Gundam Seed: ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam

gundam seed cosplay - ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam

Forget the perfect grade Gundam model kits! Here’s a cosplay of the mecha ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam from Gundam Seed!

Quite speechless with this one, really. I wonder how long it took the cosplayer to finish this?

Death Note: Amane Misa 02

death note cosplay - amane misa

This is the second Amane Misa Cosplay featured in this blog… But I have a hard time choosing from one or the other.

Philippine’s Cosplay Idol, Alodia “Edjie” Gosiengfiao, is so popular in the Philippines that she is usually asked to judge cosplay competitions instead of joining them. (Apparently, if she joins a said competition, she wins hands down. So she becomes a judge to “give chance to others”.)

This is originally found on Alodia’s Deviant Art. You may view the larger image here. Photography is done by Tricia Gosingtian.

Indeed… “What a wonderful way to kill.”

Gundam Seed: Cagalli Yula Athha

gunda seed cosplay - cagalli yula athhaThe adopted daughter of the Representative and “Lion” of the Orb Union’s Uzumi Nara Athha, Cagalli is a strong willed young woman nicknamed “Goddess of Victory” by the Desert Dawn resistance group in ZAFT-occupied Northern Africa. It is a disappointing note, however, that by season 2 of of the series (known as “Gundam Seed Destiny“), her strong will is crushed by the load of the responsibility of becoming Orb Union’s Representative upon her father’s death.

Although she is born a Natural (people whose DNA has never been genetically enhanced in any way), Cagalli is the twin sister of Coordinator, Kira Yamato. They did not know that they were siblings until sometime during the Bloody Valentine War.

Beautiful cosplay! I prefer Cagalli when she was still on Gundam Seed. In Destiny, she became too much of a crybaby for me. But anyway, great job, and a perfect location to match!

Wonderflex and Friendly Plastic

I've been reading up on this newfangled Wonderflex and its friend Friendly Plastic.
I've been searching for something to make, at the very least, the calf armour for Gwendolyn, and potentially any and all armour for Oswald, if my boyfriend decides to go as him. Both are from Odin Sphere:

After reading the FAQs and tutorials for using Wonderflex and Friendly Plastic, I feel confident enough that this could be a good solution for making armour and maybe even weapons. I am going to order a small sheet of Wonderflex and a small container of Friendly Plastic to experiment with.
I am also going to pick up some Bondo, because (1) I have never used it before, heard some mixed opinions, and want to see what it can do, and (2) I wouldn't use gesso as suggested in the Wonderflex FAQ because there is no way that will not come off in chunks.

Once I get the materials and play around with them, I'll post my results with photos.

Costume Profile - Haku from Naruto

This is the first "Costume Profile" post, where I, well, profile a costume I have made and finished.
The content of these posts will probably evolve over time, and I readily welcome any comments or suggestions about what you think these posts should contain.

Character Name: Haku (right, shown with Zabuza, left)
Series: Naruto
Worn to: Anime Boston 2007

Total Time: I didn't keep very close track of this one, but I'd estimate about 10-15 hours.
Total Cost: Again, didn't keep very good track, but I'd say about $40.

Easiest things about this costume: Shoes - Purchased for $2 in Chinatown, cut off ugly beads, painted with fabric paint.
Sweater - Found at used clothing store The Garment District for about $10.

Most difficult things about this costume: The pants were the most difficult, but weren't really difficult. I used an old pattern I had for pajama pants (will post the number and brand when I find it), only I made them shorter. I cut out triangular fabric panels and added them into the front to add volume to the pants.

Materials Used and Price Breakdown: -Pants and Sash: Plain cotton, $3/yd, Jo-Ann Fabrics
-Robe: Cotton/poly blend, $2.50/yd, Jo-Ann Fabrics
-Sweater: Found at The Garment District, $10
-Shoes: Found in Chinatown, $2. Fabric paint and foam brush, $3, Pearl Art & Craft Supply
-Hair: Fabric Scrap from making the robe. Modeling clay, $1.50, Utrecht Art Supply. 18ga. Copper wire, $3, Blick Art Materials. Silver enamel paint, $2, Utrecht Art Supply.
-Weapon: Double-ended knitting needles, about $4 for a set of 3, Jo-Ann Fabrics.
-Headband: $8, Ebay. From one of those Hong Kong guys. ^_^;

First Post... oh, how exciting ^_^;

O hi,

This is me.

And this is my brand new cosplay blog.

I hope to use this not only as a place for my thoughts on cosplay and updates on my costumes, but hopefully to also provide a resource to the cosplay community. I hope that through my experiments, successes, failures, research, and whatever else, other cosplayers will be able to make better costumes.

In 2007, I attended two cons; my first two cons. The first was Anime Boston in April, where I cosplayed as Haku from Naruto. The second was ConnectiCon in August, where I cosplayed as Suigintou from Rozen Maiden.

I learned an enormous amount from these two experiences, both about cosplay and conventions.

In 2008, I am planning on attending two cons, but they're both big. Anime Boston in March, and Otakon in August.
I plan on using Suigintou again for Anime Boston, though with some changes. For Otakon, I plan on Gwendolyn from Odin Sphere.

I hope to pass on what I've learned to everyone out there who might read this, whether you're just starting out or have been doing it for a while.

I'll be doing a lot of experiments for my Gwendolyn costume and my first ever weapon, Suigintou's sword! I hope that you'll enjoy following my progress through time and send along any comments or questions you have about cosplay, me, my projects, or anything else.

Long post is loooong... look for more in the coming days!

Dead or Alive: Kasumi

dead or alive cosplay - kasumiThis year’s Tokyo Game Show took place on September 22-23 in Japan. A lot of people were there for the game demos and releases, while others were there because of the cosplay.

Take NUTS!!!! for example. Randy, the blog’s author, was trying to decide whether or not he should take pictures and videos of the games, or the cosplay. In the end, he decided that cosplay should be his priority in taking photos of since people could simply access the official websites for the games.

This Dead or Alive cosplay was probably the best from his collection of photographs. I would think Randy agrees with me on this since he did take a lot of photos of her. And really, you don’t get to see a lot of good Kasumi cosplays everyday. (I don’t like the ones that make Kasumi look “bad” if you know what I mean).

Thanks for sharing your cosplay pictures, Randy!

Tekken 3: Ling Xiaoyu

tekken 3 cosplay - xiaoyuLast Saturday, there was a Tekken DR Tournament 2007 that occurred in the Mall of Asia. A friend of mine was one of the contestants who participated in the tournament, and I asked him if he could take some cosplay pictures.

Well, he gave me his friend’s photo collection since he was busy with the tournament. Not a lot of people had impressive cosplays, but this Ling Xiaoyu cosplayer is one of the better ones I’ve seen. She’s got the poses right, and the cute uniform too!

Thanks to Kokimonster for the photo. View the rest of the cosplays during the Tekken DR Tournament 2007 in his flickr account.

Whoever said Filipinoes can’t cosplay can go eat their words now. ^_^
